What Is the In-Off in English Pool? The in-off is one of the most misunderstood shots in English pool. Ask ten pub players when it’s legal and you’ll likely get ten different answers. The shot itself is straightforward: you pot the cue ball by cannoning it off another ball into a pocket. But whether that…
Why Safety Play Matters in English Pool English pool is a compact game. The table is small, the pockets are tight, and the balls are clustered together far more than they are in snooker or American pool. That intimacy means a single bad shot can hand your opponent a run-out. The difference between a player…
Why the Break Shot Defines the Frame The break shot in English pool is the only time in a frame where you hit the cue ball without a specific target ball dictated by the rules, and that freedom is exactly what makes it so important to understand. Get it right and you can take control…
What Is a Handicap System in English Pool? If you’ve played in a pub league long enough, you’ve almost certainly come across some form of handicapping, a structured way of adjusting match outcomes or conditions to level the playing field between players of different abilities. The core idea is simple: a stronger player gives a…
What Is a Re-Rack in English Pool? A re-rack is exactly what it sounds like: the balls are cleared from the table and re-racked as if the frame is starting fresh. What Being Snookered Means in English Pool In English pool, being snookered means your opponent has left the cue ball in a position where you cannot hit a straight, direct shot at any of your own balls, or, in certain situations, the black, without first striking a cushion or another ball. Specifically, you are snookered…
The Rule That Divides a Nation Ask ten English pool players what happens after a foul and you might get two different answers depending on where they grew up. That is not an exaggeration. The foul rule in English pool has a genuine, well-established regional split that has caused arguments in pubs and competitions for…
What Counts as a Foul in English Pool English pool fouls catch players out more often than most care to admit. Whether you’re playing under Blackball rules, the World Eightball Pool Federation (WEPF) ruleset, or standard pub rules, the categories of foul are largely consistent, and understanding exactly what triggers each one is the difference…
Why 8-Ball Has More Than One Set of Rules Ask ten pool players what the rules of 8-ball are and you’ll get at least three different answers. That’s not because anyone is wrong, it’s because 8-ball is governed by multiple organizations, each with their own official ruleset, and those rulesets differ in ways that genuinely…
The Push Shot Explained A push shot happens when the cue tip maintains contact with the cue ball for longer than a single, clean strike. Instead of hitting the ball and immediately separating, the tip pushes or shoves the cue ball forward, often because the tip is still on the ball when the cue ball…
