How to Move a Pool Table — Disassembly Steps and When to Hire a Pro
Never Move a Pool Table Whole
This is the single most important rule: a pool table is not designed to be moved assembled. The legs and frame are built to bear vertical load, not the lateral stresses of dragging or rolling. Attempting to move a slate table assembled almost always results in cracked slate, stripped leg bolts, or a warped frame — or all three. Disassembly is not optional; it is the only correct method.
What You Need Before You Start
- A staple remover and flat-head screwdriver (for cloth removal)
- A socket set and adjustable wrench (for leg and slate bolts)
- Moving blankets and heavy-duty packing tape
- A minimum of 3–4 adults for carrying slate panels (each slate panel on a 3-piece table weighs 60–100kg)
- Photographs before you start — document every stage so reassembly is straightforward
Disassembly Steps
- Remove the pockets. Leather or plastic drop pockets usually unscrew from underneath. Stapled leather pockets need the staples carefully removed — avoid tearing the leather if you plan to reuse it.
- Remove the rail cushions. The cushion rails bolt from underneath the frame. Loosen all bolts and lift the rails clear, keeping the bolt sets with each rail (they are often different lengths).
- Take off the cloth. The cloth is stapled to the underside of the slate or glued on cheaper tables. Use a staple remover methodically and fold the cloth cleanly. If the cloth is in good condition, it can be relaid after the move — if not, plan to replace it on reassembly.
- Lift and transport the slate. For 3-piece slate tables, unscrew the slate mounting bolts and lift each panel separately. They are heavy and awkward — this is the step where an extra pair of hands matters most. Carry slate panels on their edge (like a piece of glass) rather than flat — this prevents flex and cracking.
- Disassemble the frame and legs. Most table frames break into a few major sections. Unscrew the legs and wrap each piece in moving blankets.
Transporting and Reassembling
Slate panels must be transported upright and secured against movement. Place them in the vehicle edge-down against a padded wall and prevent any lateral sliding. Even small impacts during transit can crack or chip slate at the edges.
On reassembly, the most critical step is levelling the table and its slate panels correctly before the cloth goes back on. Take your time at this stage — a 30-minute levelling process saves hours of frustrating play on a tilted surface.
When to Hire a Professional
Table mechanics who disassemble and move pool tables professionally cost roughly £100–£300 (UK) or $150–$400 (US) depending on distance and table size. This is worth it if:
- You have a quality 3-piece slate table — the cost of cracked slate far exceeds a professional’s fee.
- The move involves stairs, tight doorways, or large distances.
- You are unsure about any step of the reassembly, particularly slate shimming and cloth stretching.
- You want the cloth replaced at the same time — professionals typically offer re-clothing as part of a move job.
What Happens If You Skip Disassembly
Beyond the damage risk, moving a table assembled is a serious injury risk. A 300–500kg slate table tipping during a move has caused serious injuries. The disassembly process is tedious but straightforward — treat it as a non-negotiable step.
